Protecting our Neighborhoods and Small Town Character
Karen was instrumental in creating an integrated traffic management program that will help reduce speeding in neighborhoods. For Karen, the most important role of government is to make sure residents are safe in their homes and on city streets. She helped add 10 more officers to the police force and add more neighborhood patrols. Karen ensured that public safety was added to the ranking criteria used by the Mayor’s Dirt Task Force.
In many areas of the city, including District I, homes and streets are impacted by long-standing flooding problems. She has continually raised concerns about the safety of residents and pushed the Council to address these concerns. As a result of Karen’s advocacy, starting in 2008, city council will begin implementing a plan to fix long-standing drainage problems. Karen strongly supports subarea planning as a way of giving neighborhoods a strong voice in directing their own future. Hundreds of citizens have participated in the creation of subarea or neighborhood land-use plans.
